 Robert Dunlop

Robert Dunlop was one of the greatest ever exponents of
motorcycle racing ever to come out of the island of Ireland. Robert
was a multi title winner and indeed still holds the record number of
wins ever recorded at the world famous North West 200 circuit with
15 victories. Other notable achievements include the 1991 British
125cc champion and 1990 Macau Grand Prix winner.

Robert was also awarded the very prestigious Freeman of the
borough honour by Ballymoney Borough Council in recognition of
his tremendous career in motor cycle racing throughout the world.
Robert also had a civic reception held in Ballymoney Town Hall to
mark his 1991 BRITISH 125cc championship title.

Ballymoney Borough Council are to provide a new memorial
garden at Castle Street, Ballymoney so we the committee of the
Robert Dunlop Memorial Sculpture Fund together with Roberts
family have set about raising the necessary funds required to
enable us to erect a sculpture be-fitting of Robert in his new
memorial garden.  We have been reliably informed by the experts
that the sum required to erect such a sculpture will be in the region
of £60,000. So, together with all subscriptions and donations made
to the fund, we will be able to erect a sculpture worthy of such a
talented and gifted sportsman.

Many thanks for your kindness and generosity,

Former Irish Superbike Champion Michael Pearson along with the MP Racing Team will travel to the Czech Republic on May 20th with a host of regular Irish Road Racers joining him for the annual Horice Road Races, after the Team finalised their plans on Friday night. Confirming his entry, Pearson said that he was looking forward to the event with much excitment.

The Horice Road Races which have been running for several years now is gaining more and more attention from British and Irish riders, with the 2010 meeting on track to beat all previous records in rider entries.
Pavel Koci, from the organising Club in the Czech Republic attended the Cookstown 100 and Tandragee 100 Road Races in 2009, with Koci instrumental in gaining the attention of the Irish contingent that will make the trip in four months time. One of the main organisers of the Irish riders is regular Irish Supertwin competitor Darren Gilpin.

Darren Gilpin: "The Motorcycle Club at Horice are very passionate about road racing and Irish Road Racing, so as the word spread, Pavel was searching to attract riders from Ireland and the response has been amazing. Due to the number of Irish competitors traveling to Horice, it was soon established that sending machines and equipment in trucks due to the logistics in traveling to the Czech Republic would be cheaper. I was quite impressed with the structure and size of the meeting, and that many top European road racers have been taking part in recent years, such as Rico Penzkopher and Henrick Voit to name a few. Along with the riders, many race fans are also traveling to Horice from Ireland this year, with some Press people from Ireland also going along to see just what makes the Horice races tick".

Michael Pearson: "We are all set and booked on with flights etc, so its all systems go. There will be seven members of our team travelling to Horice, so its going to feel just ike any other race back home, and its one meeting that I am looking forward to".

Willis Marshall: (Team Manager) "It has taken a few months to get here, but here we are, with just the date of departure now next on our list. Pavel Koci from the Czech Republic has been tremendous help and has arranged our accomodation etc for the trip which has taken a huge burden off our shoulders, so we want to put on a good show and repay the lads in Horice".

Day to day times and results will be updated from Horice on the following link. www.michaelpearsonracing.com

AIM Racing are set for a Suzuki-powered double championship chase this year with Alistair Flanagan's team signing experienced road racer Gary Johnson to line up in the new BSB Evo class whilst Dennis Hobbs will be targeting the National Superstock 1000 Championship title.

Johnson joins the team who have previously had success in the past with riders including Sean Emmett, Stuart Easton, John McGuinness and most recently Steve Plater in 2008. Now the Scottish team are gearing up to make an impact on their return in both classes with Johnson combining track and road races and Hobbs returning after his 2009 season was cut short through injury.

Johnson said: "It is a great opportunity for me to race in the new Evo class and combine it with my three road race events. It is definitely exciting and I am going to attack it from the start and be completely open-minded on what to expect. As it is a new class it should be pretty equal so I know that the competition will be stiff. It is a completely new venture with the Evo class and things are shaping up well so we won't be able to judge the competition until we are on track.

"For me I want to get good results for the team in the first year of the Evo class but it is also a great chance for me to get the track time and develop the bike. In terms of BSB we all have our fingers crossed for a good season and I think we have as good a chance as anyone to go out there and have a good shot at the first Evo title."

Team owner Alistair Flanagan said: "This is a great chance for teams who have limited outside sponsorship as such to still be able to compete at the highest level in the UK as we are assured of great coverage for not a lot of outlay, and it will be a competitive, level playing field with the introduction of a MoTeC ECU which is controlled and monitored."

International North West 200 organisers Coleraine & District Motor Club Ltd will next year promote a six race programme following a decision to remove the 250cc race category. The revised programme will comprise a 125cc and Superstock race, two 600cc Supersport and two Superbike races.

Speaking on behalf of the new management team, Race Director Mervyn Whyte MBE said, “Having considered this option for the past couple of years we now believe the time is right to discontinue the 250cc category. Two stroke bikes no longer feature in Grand Prix or British Superbike race programmes and as a result manufacturers have reduced the number of models and ranges produced each year.”

“We therefore don’t have the same number of teams nor individual competitors wanting to enter this particular class and having taken all these factors into consideration, felt it was appropriate to promote a strong six race event in 2010.”

The NW200 management team have also proposed significant changes to the Thursday practice session. “In response to competitor and team feedback, the Coleraine Club is examining opportunities to hold our traditional Thursday Practice Race during the day as opposed to later in the evening. We would anticipate roads closing on Thursday morning at 9.30am and re-opening at 3pm and believe it would cause less disruption to residents and the business community as well as providing important additional machine set up and practice time for riders and in particular event newcomers.”

Coleraine & District Motor Club is currently consulting with key organisations and business people as well as local residents. Tuesday evening practice and Saturday Race Day timings are set to remain the same.

McAdoo Kawasaki Racing 2010

McAdoo Kawasaki Racing are delighted to announce the re-signing of Conor Cummins for the 2010 road racing season.

After a terrific 2009, Conor has put pen to paper on a new deal to continue racing for McAdoo Kawasaki on the open roads, as well as signing for the Black Horse Kawasaki Superstock team to compete at BSB level.

Conrod’s impressive year included two TT podiums, becoming only the third rider in history to record an official 130+mph TT lap, an outright lap record at the Southern 100, a world record lap of 133.28mph at Dundrod where he won two Superbike races, and most recently, runner-up at the Macau GP, pushing Stuart Easton all the way to the flag.

Conor commented “I’m extremely pleased to continue riding for the McAdoo Kawasaki Racing team – we’ve had an awesome season together and hopefully, 2010 will be better again. I love the Kawasaki Ninja bikes and McAdoo Kawasaki are the official
Kawasaki UK Road Racing team again for 2010, so it’s great for me. I’m also chuffed to be competing full time next year on the Kawasaki’s as I’ve also signed to race British Superstock for Black Horse Kawasaki, the official Kawasaki UK Superstock team. It couldn’t be better really, roll on 2010!!”

Team owner, Winston McAdoo is equally pleased: “It’s terrific news for us to have signed Conor again for 2010. We’ve always believed the lad is a top class rider and I’d like to think we played our part in proving that this season. He really is at the top of his game, and at just 23 years of age, the most exciting rider in road racing, bar none. We’ll be working hard over the winter to give him what he needs to win. The Kawasaki ZX-6R and ZX-10R are extremely competitive bikes and with the help of our engine tuners Race Techniques and Cosworth, we hope to further unleash the potential of the Ninja bikes for 2010. There’s no reason why we can’t build on our success of this season and perhaps, take it a step further.”

COOKSTOWN hotelier, Milton Thom, who was badly injured during a motorcycle road race at Skerries last year has extended thanks to all those who helped save his life.
The family and friends of Mr Milton Thom have raised the grand sum of £12,000 in appreciation of the tremendous work carried out by hospitals, medical staff and motorcycle medics after Milton was seriously injured while watching a motorcycle race at the Skerries near Dublin in July, 2008.
Milty, as he is well known, was initially treated at the scene by the Motor Cycle Union of Ireland Medical Team before being taken to the specialist Burns Unit St James' Hospital, Dublin where he underwent treatment for many months before being transferred to the Burns Unit at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.
The popular hotel proprietor and President of the Cookstown and District Motor Cycle Club is now back home again and is in good spirits.
During his time in the hospitals, staff at the Royal Hotel were inundated with messages of support from Milty's many friends and acquaintances.
As a way of extending their sincere thanks for saving Milty's life, the Thom family decided to fundraise for all those who kindly helped the Cookstown man and lifelong motorcycle supporter.
The family and friends raised the money through donations and running the Belfast Marathon.
As a result £12,000 was raised and this was divided between the Burns Unit at St James' Hospital, Dublin, the Burns Unit at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast and the Motor Cycle Union of Ireland Medical Team.
£1,000 was raised by the Braeside Bar, Cookstown.
The special presentations took place in the Royal Hotel, Cookstown

The 2010 Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup - More stars to be made

The Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup looks to its fourth season in 2010 with 15 nations represented in the provisional entry list of 25 riders. The number of races for the coming season has been increased to 10 so the riders get more opportunity to develop their skills and prove themselves in front of the Grand Prix fans, teams and media.

There are more double race weekends so that the Rookies will perform both on the same day as the MotoGP race in Jerez, Assen, Sachsenring and Brno and on the preceding day of MotoGP qualifying in Jerez, Mugello, Assen, Sachsenring, Brno and Misano.

With an ever increasing fan base and TV coverage the series goes from strength to strength. The 2009 Cup winner Jakub Kornfeil received his FIM award from the Federation President Mr. Vito Ippolito at the final MotoGP round in Valencia where he was racing in the 125GP class and the 16 year old Czech is due to start next season as a full time Grand Prix rider.

"It is what I have been working for. I knew that winning the Rookies Cup would be my best chance of having a full time Grand Prix ride. So now I have a very good opportunity in Grand Prix as a Red Bull athlete and I know that I still have a lot of learning to do but I want to be racing in the top twenty and get some points if I can," said Kornfeil.

The Cup winner is not the only one to be launched into a professional career from this year's Rookie Cup; runner-up 17 year old Norwegian Sturla Fagerhaug is also hoping to compete in the 125 GP class. Third placed Florian Marino, the 16 year old Frenchman, steps across to the European 600 Superstock Series as a full time member of the prestigious Ten Kate Team.

"I have a great chance in a great team and I have to thank everyone in the Rookies Cup for helping me so much to progress as a rider, especially Gustl who taught me how to win," said Marino recalling Rider Coach Gustl Auinger's words to him in Donington after a string of top 6 finishes. Three weeks later he won in Brno.

With those men added to the list of the Rookies Alumni already in GP racing like 2007 Cup winner Johann Zarco, and the runners-up from 2007 and 2008; Lorenzo Savadori and Luis Salom, it is easy to see how well the Cup has proved itself the development ground for teenagers with great ambitions.

To see a compilation of the action that produced this year's winners go to the video section of the website http://www.redbullrookiescup.com/videos.php. Those in the Alpe-Adria region have been watching the special 7 episode TV series "Young Guns Rising" on the Rookies Cup on Servus TV. The series will be made available in English to broadcasters around the world. A different and equally special Rookies series "Ride Fast. Live Young." started on the Web TV site http://www.VBS.tv on November 20th with the first of 8 episodes. The web casts feature the three US riders and the other top Rookies. Both the series show a blend of track action and behind the scenes insight.

Next season the Cup will again be broadcast live on the Rookies Cup Website http://www.redbullrookiescup.com and can be viewed on and increasing number of TV stations around the world. With the men in front of him having graduated the way is clear for 16 year old Californian Jake Gagne, 4th in 2009, to complete is incredible transformation from motocrosser to winning international road racer in just 3 seasons by taking the 2010 Rookies Cup. He will be fiercely opposed by another 14 riders who remain in the Cup from this season and the 10 Rookies brought in new from this year's Selection Process.

The Selection Process for the 2011 Rookies Cup will be opened in the Spring of 2010 and the Cup starts with race one in Jerez on May 1st. With the standard of riding in the Cup improving from year to year the Selection Committee will be looking for riders who are very successful in their national championships around the world to be invited to the Selection Event.

- Mountain Course race schedule reverts to core programme
- Billown Lightweight and Ultra Lightweight TT Races no longer part of schedule
- Parade laps return on Senior Race Day in 2010

Following the thrilling series of races in 2009, when all of the solo race records were broken and a new outright lap record was also set, the Department of Tourism and Leisure has announced that the main 2010 TT Race programme will remain unchanged. However, the Billown TT Races will no longer form part of the TT Race programme as the race organisers have decided to concentrate resources on the core mountain circuit races in 2010.

Visitors to the 2009 TT Races were treated to the fastest laps in history, the visit of Moto GP star Valentino Rossi as well as witnessing the first TT win for the latest member of the Dunlop dynasty, 21 year old Michael Dunlop. The crowds also saw the fastest ever female lap of the course from newcomer Jenny Tinmouth.

As in 2008, nine different riders featured on the podium in 2009 with Michael Dunlop scoring his first TT win, following in the footsteps of uncle Joey and father Robert. This win is expected to take the number of former winners returning to the Island to contest the 2010 solo TT races to 11.

John McGuinness confirmed his position as one of the greatest TT riders of all time by moving to outright second place in the winners list with 15 TT victories, behind only Joey Dunlop’s 26 titles, passing the great Mike Hailwood, while Dave Molyneux moved further ahead at the top of the all time sidecar list, extending his titles to 14, four ahead of second placed Rob Fisher.

Qualifying week starts with a Free Practice session on Saturday 29th May 2010 and runs until Friday 4th June. Race Week begins with the Superbike and first Sidecar Race on Saturday June 5th. Monday 7th will see the Superstock and first Supersport Race classes, which saw some of the closest racing in 2009. The second Supersport and Sidecar Races are scheduled for Wednesday 9th June with Race Week culminating in the blue riband Senior TT on Friday 11th June.

The race organisation is currently developing plans for another zero carbon emissions race on the Isle of Man in 2010 and the slot has been provisionally scheduled on Wednesday 9th of June following the Supersport and Superstock TT Races.

Classic racing motorcycles will make a welcome return to the TT in 2010 with the Suzuki 50th Anniversary Lap of Honour and the TT Classic Parade scheduled for the morning of Senior Race Day.

Both events will feature racing machines manufactured before 1998 with capacity for a total of 200 entries across both events. Entries are invited and will be reviewed by a committee featuring representatives from ACU Events Limited and the Department of Tourism and Leisure. Any revenue derived from the Suzuki 50th Anniversary Lap of Honour and Isle of Man TT Classic Parade will be used to fund the future development and safety of the TT Races.

Martyn Quayle, MHK, Minister for Tourism and Leisure, commented:

“We are operating in a tough financial climate and have therefore decided to concentrate our resources on the core race programme that is proving so popular with fans. We are again delivering a thrilling racing experience, with many fans and media commenting that the TT Races are now as strong and exciting as they have been in living memory. We believe that with the return of the classic parades that there is now something for all motorcycle enthusiasts.”

The Isle of Man Department of Tourism and Leisure today announced an action packed Festival for the 2010 TT Races. The programme will see seven nights of thrilling entertainment on Douglas sea front as well as the return of many old favourites around the rest of the Island.

Extreme sports, stunt shows, air displays, music, comedy and film will all feature in the action-packed calendar. Fans will also have numerous opportunities to meet and greet their heroes at the chat shows and fan zones during the festival. And if that wasn’t enough, TT2010 will also feature the 50th anniversary celebrations of leading Japanese manufacturer Suzuki's involvement in the TT Races.

The entertainment programme kicks off on Thursday 3rd June with the TT ‘Day of Champions’. Former motorcycling champions and TT legends will be interviewed on the main stage at the TT Grandstand. All the stars will also be on hand to meet fans, give racing tips and sign autographs. With even more stars appearing daily during race week, the TT Main Stage will be at the heart of the action.

Some of the UK’s leading stand-up comedians are also being lined up to appear on the Island during the TT festival. The Island has earned itself a reputation as a comedy hotbed in recent months with performances from the likes of Lee Evans, Alan Carr, Sean Lock, Ross Noble, Al Murray and Michael McIntyre and negotiations are currently at an advanced stage in confirming appearances in 2010.

Saturday 5th June sees the beginning of the seven-night ‘Extreme Sports’ extravaganza on Harris Promenade. The TT Entertainment Zone will feature seven individual shows featuring the best extreme sports acts, stunt shows and classic bikes. These shows are sure to be extremely popular but fans needn’t worry too much about missing any of the action as everything will be replayed on a huge video screen.

Thrill seekers will be able to experience an adrenaline rush of their own with a choice of bungee jumping, gyroscopes, simulators, slingshots and more. There will also be a dedicated children’s experience as part of the activities.

The Villa Marina will also host the post race prize presentations on Monday 7th and Wednesday 9th June with fans getting the chance to mingle with the prize winners from the Superbike, Sidecar, Superstock and Supersport races.

Manx National Heritage will be hosting a temporary exhibition celebrating Suzuki’s 50th anniversary of competing in the TT at the Manx Museum in Douglas. Suzuki machines have been hugely prominent at the TT Races since 1960 and the exhibition promises to be a treat for anyone interested in motorcycle racing. It will feature historic machinery, leathers and memorabilia marking the highlights of Suzuki’s participation on the Isle of Man. Among the Suzuki names featured will be Mitsui Ito, Ernst Degner, Mick Grant, David Jefferies, Adrian Archibald and Bruce Anstey. The exhibition is the first in a number of events being planned by Suzuki during the 2010 TT to celebrate their anniversary.

The TT this year will also offer something for fans of Moto GP. Sunday 6th June is being earmarked as ‘Moto GP day’ at the TT Grandstand. Leading motorcycle industry personalities will host a live screening of all of the action from the Italian Grand Prix at Mugello as well as chat shows and race analysis in the Grandstand’s ‘fan-zone’

The Grandstand’s giant screen will also be replaying all the action from the TT fortnight. The Qualifying, Preview and Race highlights programmes will be shown every evening following the day’s action along with live timing data and Radio TT commentaries during the races.

There will be more big screen action at the Villa Marina throughout race week. The Broadway Cinema will be showing a full programme of bike themed films in celebration of all things ‘two wheels’. A particular highlight will be a rare screening of ‘Take it to the Limit’. Hosted by director Peter Starr, the film features classic 1970’s race action from riders such as Steve Baker, Kenny Roberts and Barry Sheene. There is also footage of Mike Hailwood’s return to the Island as a travelling marshal for the 1977 Manx Grand Prix ahead of his 1978 TT return.

The action during the TT festival won’t just be confined to Douglas. Peel in the West of the Island will host a special TT Day on Sunday 6th June featuring attractions for all the family. Ramsey continues to host the ever-popular Ramsey Sprint on Tuesday 8th June, the drag sprint held on the Mooragh Promenade on the north side of the town. Open to everyone, the Sprint features a wide range of bikes and experiences for all the family. The Red Arrows are also planned to appear for a display during the day and will return during the evening over Douglas Bay performing during the ever popular Douglas Beach Race. Plans are also being finalised for a TT event to be held in the picturesque town of Port Erin in the South of the Island.

The action moves to Laxey on the east coast of the Island on Thursday 10th when local motorcycle club the Moddey Dhoo host their annual meeting on Laxey breakwater. The day will feature chat shows, auctions, custom motorbike displays and live music.

The entertainment schedule comes to a climatic end on Senior Race Day, Friday 11th June, with the final night of action on Douglas Promenade. Included in the programme will be the Senior TT Prize Presentation, a ‘Winner’s Parade’ featuring all the week’s race winners and their winning machines, the Battle of Britain air show and a huge fireworks display to mark the end of the festival.

Hon Martyn Quayle, MHK, Minister for Tourism and Leisure commented:

“We’ve carried out a lot of research and put a huge effort into coming up with a festival that we think will have something for everyone. We’ve got lots going on all over the island, especially during race week itself and many of the attractions and events are free to attend. We want to make sure that visitors and Island residents are able to find many things to do throughout the TT this year.”

Dungannon's Ryan Farquhar will again spearhead Kawasaki's assault on the International and National road races in 2010, with the 33-year old joining forces with MSS Colchester Kawasaki for his Superbike campaign. Ryan will use a specially prepared Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R Superbike to race in the Isle of Man TT, North West 200 and Ulster GP road races whilst he will also continue with his own KMR Kawasaki's in the Supersport and Superstock divisions. The Superbike will run in identical colours to the MSS Colchester Kawasaki British Superbike team whilst the 600cc and Superstock machines will again be in Ryan's familiar black and orange livery.

Double TT winner Farquhar has recently been voted Irish Motorcyclist of the Year after a season that has seen him top the prestigious Duke Road Race rankings and surpass Joey Dunlop’s amazing total of 119 Irish national race wins. Ryan took 61 race wins and seven road race championships during a busy 2009 race season.
MSS Colchester Kawasaki will create a dedicated Superbike, similar in specification to their British Superbike machines but set-up to cope for with the unique demands of the long distance road circuits.

The new partnership was announced at this week’s International Motorcycle and Scooter Show at the NEC on the Kawasaki stand, alongside new signings for the World Superbike squad.

Ryan Farquhar commented, “I’m really excited about this opportunity, I’ve seen the speed of the MSS bikes during British Superbike this year and the team have been doing really well. Nick Morgan has been doing my engines for many years and it’s great to be supported by the team and Kawasaki UK, I can’t wait. With the MSS Colchester Kawasaki Superbike and my own KMR team, it promises to be another great season.”

MSS Colchester Kawasaki Team Owner, Nick Morgan said : ‘We’re very pleased to be able to announce a full road racing programme with Ryan at the forefront. Ryan had a very strong year on the roads and we had a great leap forward in BSB, so it could all come together for a great season.”

Michael Johnstone, Kawasaki Motor UK Sales and Marketing Manager added, “This is an impressive partnership, our official Kawasaki Motors UK Superbike team and one of the most successful road racers of all time. We look forward to seeing how Ryan performs using the very latest Ninja machinery

Multiple Isle of Man TT winner Ian Lougher will ride Kawasaki machinery in 2010, it has been confirmed.

The Ulster-based Welshman has been selected to run Kawasaki’s official British Superstock entry under the Team Blackhorse Kawasaki banner.

Lougher himself will ride at the TT, as well as other major road racing events, using both the Ninja ZX-6R and ZX-10R machinery in Superbike, Superstock and Supersport classes.

The team will be completed by two further ride in the Junior Superstock class, under Lougher’s experienced and watchful eye as part of the British Superbike Championship calendar.

And in the 1000cc Superstock category, Kawasaki Motors UK’s new official team in the class plans to mount a concerted assault in search of championship honours.

Using Kawasaki’s well proven and powerful Ninja machinery as the basis for the team’s championship challenge, Lougher is relishing this chance to further increase his experience of team management.

He said:‘Kawasaki have a long association with Blackhorse and the Ninjas are great machines for the Superstock and other classes. The base packages have already proved themselves admirably and now it’s down to me and the team to turn this potential into even more Kawasaki podiums.’

With potential rider negotiations at an advanced stage, the prospect of success is something that KMUK’s Racing Coordinator Ross Burridge relishes.

He said ‘Ian is as competitive as ever and understands every aspect of racing on roads and closed circuits. I am sure he and his teammates will make Team Blackhorse Kawasaki one of the most competitive outfits in the paddock.’

 DONALD & ANSTEY RE-SIGN FOR 2010

Northern Ireland based TAS Racing is pleased to announce that both antipodean road racing stars, Cameron Donald and Bruce Anstey, will be retained for the 2010 international road racing season.

Managed by father and son pairing, Hector and Philip Neill, Relentless Suzuki by TAS Racing is already in the planning process for 2010 with their Superbike machinery nearing completion. The team's official race schedule will be announced in the coming weeks, but an early season series of tests have already been pencilled in for February 2010.

Both Donald and Anstey will major their 2010 season’s on the international road races, but will also compete in a number of hand-picked British Superstock rounds and local events, to improve their chances of adding to the team’s long list of international road racing achievements.

Philip Neill – Team Principal
"As per normal, there were lots of rumours suggesting we would change riders for 2010, or that Bruce and Cameron would change teams. I am prepared to admit, that although we had podium finishes in all three international road races and a North West 200 race win with Alastair in 2009, it was a little short of what is expected from TAS Racing.

"As the most successful international road racing team in recent years, with 15 Isle of Man TT, 12 North West 200 and 11 Ulster Grand Prix victories, we set a very high standard for ourselves.

"Although we did consider other options for 2010, along with our partners Suzuki and Relentless, my Father and I always had the desire to remain with the same riders for the international races next season.

"I would like to take this opportunity to welcome both riders back for our next assault on the international road racing scene. It will be Bruce’s eighth with TAS Racing and Cameron's third; and in closing I’d also like to thank our long-standing partners for their continued support.”

The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company has launched a new special offer specifically for the TT.

Called the TT Taster, it offers fans the opportunity to experience some of the TT atmosphere during the busy build-up to race week.

While the ferries and accommodation for race week are already getting full, there is still availability during practice week and the new offer of £99 return for a bike and rider provides great value for those who wish to share in the TT experience.

For visitors who wish to book a combined ferry and accommodation package, Steam Packet Holidays have deals starting at £159 per person for three night’s bed and breakfast.

Practice week offers a lot for enthusiasts and those who may be visiting the TT for the first time. All the riders can be seen during the excitement of the practice sessions at a time when spectator positions are less busy than in race week.

The Island’s roads are also less congested allowing visitors to travel more freely around the Island’s beautiful scenery to its many attractions.

The offer is being promoted in association with the Department of Tourism and Leisure at the NEC Bike Show in Birmingham, which runs from 27 November to 6 December.

Isle of Man Steam Packet Company Chief Executive Mark Woodward said: “I am delighted to announce this new offer in support of the TT. The TT Taster provides the opportunity for motorcycle racing fans to experience some of the atmosphere of the Island’s top motorsport event, but perhaps at a more leisurely pace, if that is possible with the TT!

“I feel sure that it will attract new visitors to the Island for this prestigious event and will be of valuable assistance to the Island’s tourist sector and the accommodation providers at a time when capacity is available.”

Minister for the Department of Tourism and Leisure Hon Martyn Quayle MHK commented: “The TT continues to be a major contributor to the Island’s economy. I am delighted that the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company has introduced this new special offer to attract new or existing TT fans to savour some of the TT experience during practice week, when there is greater availability of accommodation. I am sure this offer will be welcomed by TT fans and the Island’s tourist industry alike.”

With the increasing popularity of the 650 SuperTwins at road races during the season recently concluded, the organisers of the Steam Packet International Southern 100 Road Races have added the class to the 2010 meeting which takes place between 12th & 15th July.

Club Chairman & Clerk of the Course for the Southern 100, Phil Taubman said ‘The Committee has followed the development of the SuperTwins at road races in Northern Ireland, Eire and at Oliver’s Mount, England’s only pure road racing venue and feel that the class will compliment the races already run on the Billown Course.

‘The races run over the past season have attracted good entries, both in quantity and quality and the races planned during the 2010 Southern 100 should provide the exciting racing seen annually at the July event.’

The Southern 100 club are to include two eight-lap races for the 650 fourstroke SuperTwins on the Wednesday evening and Thursday afternoon on Championship Day.

Regulations for the 2010 Southern 100 will be available via the club’s website, www.southern100.com early in the New Year, along with similar regulations for the Blackford’s Pre-TT Classic Road Races.

Amor signs with JMF/Millsport Yamaha for 2010

Keith Amor has today announced that he has signed for the JMF/Millsport Yamaha team for the 2010 season with the sole aim of securing his first International road race win. The announcement comes a week after news broke that Amor and Wilson Craig Racing had ended their partnership after two extremely successful years together and it presents the Scottish ace with a new challenge for the year ahead. It also puts him in an enviable situation, having his deal for 2010 already signed with many of his fellow leading competitors, and rivals, yet to secure berths for next season.

The move will see the 37-year old make a switch to Yamaha machinery for a concerted attack on the three Internationals – the Isle of Man TT, the North West 200 and Ulster GP – as well as contesting selected Irish national short circuit and road race meetings. In what promises to be a busy year for the team, plans are also in place to contest the Macau GP, the Southern 100, selected British Championship races and, potentially, the Scarborough Gold Cup.

The move to JMF/Millsport and Yamaha brings to an end Amor’s relationship with Wilson Craig Racing, a relationship that saw both rider and team elevate their status substantially. In a short space of time, they achieved success immediately with numerous wins and lap records at the Irish National road races as well as recording podiums at all three of the International road races. Although a win ultimately eluded them on the International stage, Amor and Wilson Craig Racing established themselves as, arguably, the number one privateer team.

However, the new deal with JMF/Millsport has got Amor extremely excited about his chances of success for 2010 as he explained. “It’s been a real hard decision to leave Wilson’s team as we’ve had two great years together but I felt the time was right to move on and take on a new challenge and joining the JMF/Millsport team has given me just that. Talks with the team were very positive and I’m really happy with the deal we’ve struck so I’m already looking forward to next year. It’s great to have the deal sorted so soon and we have a full winter programme of testing planned so it’s a really exciting time for me – I’m very confident that we’ll have a successful year in 2010”

“Like I say, it was very tough to leave Wilson Craig Racing and I want to publicly thank Wilson and everyone else connected for the team for all their hard work, commitment and support over the last 18 months. We built the team from the ground up and enjoyed some really happy and successful times together, none more so than this year where we took podium positions at the TT, North West 200 and Ulster GP, and it’s been an absolute pleasure working with them. We’ve parted on amicable terms and I’d like to wish them all the very best for the future.”

Once again, Keith will contest the Superbike, Supersport and Superstock categories with the new partnership due to start an intensive programme of testing later this year.

 Pearson Goes Green

Ballygowan rider Michael Pearson will spearhead the 2010 Irish and Ulster Road Race Championships with a double Kawasaki assault, with the 32 year old Co-Down rider having a 1000cc and Supersport 600 Kawasaki at his disposal.
Pearson will be equipped with the ex Ryan Farquhar 2009 ZX10 Kawasaki that took the Dungannon rider to the Irish Superbike Road Race Championship this year, with the machine being supplied by Aghadowey building contractor Ivan Morrell.
A new Supersport 600 Kawasaki which will be race prepared by Nick Morgan of MSS Kawasaki, is being added to the Pearson stable with this machine being supplied by Pearson's long time sponsor, Davy Greer of Carryduff Forklifts.

Michael Pearson: " I am delighted to have my machines for 2010 sorted out at this early stage, and now I just need to try and attract Sponsorship to run both machines. I am indebted to Ivan Morrell who has purchased the ex Ryan Farquhar Kawasaki Superbike for me to ride in 2010, with the machine being ridden under the Morrell Racing banner. Davy Greer and I have decided to go with a 600 Kawasaki in the Supersport class in 2010, as I will be having one of the new 600 Kawasaki's fully tuned by MSS Kawasaki, and run in the Carryduff Forklifts livery. I have never ridden Kawasaki's in the past so it is a whole new ball game for the Team. I tested on the ex Ryan Farquhar Superbike at Kirkistown last week, and I was very impressed with the bike on how she handled and the power compared to my old R1 Yamaha was like chalk and cheese, so I am very excited about next season on this machine".

Willis Marshall: (Manager) "This is very good news for Michael. To have machinery sorted out at this early stage means that we can work on trying to attract sponsorship, which is proving very difficult at the moment, but I intend to work hard at that over the coming months. Its very good to have Ivan Morrell onboard for next year, with Ivan having a wealth of experience working with the Kawasaki Superbike. Nick Morgan will be kitting out the 600 for DGM (Davy Greer Motorsport) Kawasaki, and we all know the pedigree that Nick brings with his Team. I have worked with MSS Kawasaki in the past with PJ O'Kane, so I know that he will supply the goods to our requirements".

New Management Structure Unveiled for North West 200

The International North West 200 has unveiled a brand new operational and management structure set up with support from the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure, the Northern Ireland Tourist Board and Coleraine Borough Council. Within the new format, former Clerk of Course Mervyn Whyte MBE will take on the new role of Race Director and oversee the overall operation working alongside a management team of seven personnel who will be responsible for the areas of safety, the paddock, general duties, communications, finance, operations and course set up.

Commenting on the changes, Sports Minister Nelson McCausland said: “The huge potential of the NW200 needs to be strategically managed and Mervyn’s new role in delivery will allow him to concentrate on improving the event for fans and competitors.

“Over recent years the Northern Ireland Executive through my Department has demonstrated its commitment to making this event a success through the provision of over £0.5 million of funding. This funding has been instrumental in improving circuit safety, employing a business development manager, developing the event’s website, resurfacing the paddock area and supporting two new marketing campaigns.”

In conclusion the Minister said: “I would like to thank Mervyn Whyte for the hard work, commitment and determination he has given to this event over the years as Clerk of Course. I am pleased that he has decided to stay on in a different role and I have no doubt that he will continue to provide valuable input to what is undoubtedly an internationally renowned event.”

In a first for the North West 200 Coleraine Borough Council will also assign an events co-ordinator to the North West 200 2010 team who will work on a part-time basis supporting Mervyn Whyte and Laura McManus in events and organisational activities. The Council’s executive support is part of an extensive and enhanced financial package which alongside DCAL’s funding will help secure the future of the world famous road race which attracts upwards of 130,000 visitors each year.

The Mayor of Coleraine, Cllr Sandy Gilkinson, commented: “Coleraine Borough Council is pleased to continue its backing for the North West 200 event and has put in place a package of support that will help the Coleraine and District Motor Club to progress with their planning for 2010 and thereafter. This includes some executive assistance from Council for the 2010 event, financial contribution and extensive help in kind.

“Council welcomes the new structure for the event. It is important that the steps are put in place to ensure the long term sustainability of the North West 200. Coleraine Borough Council is committed to working with the club to ensure long term success. “Coleraine Borough Council recognises the excellent work done by the club to bring this fabulous event to the north coast every year. We also commend DCAL for their continued support, their contribution is further recognition of the importance of the North West 200 to Northern Ireland.
“We look forward to working in partnership with the club towards a successful 2010 event”.

New Race Director Mervyn Whyte explained the background to the new structure: “As indicated earlier this summer the workload for the Clerk of Course had grown significantly in recent years and it was necessary to introduce a revamped organisational structure. Following energetic and proactive discussions with both local and national government, Coleraine & District Motor Club Ltd is delighted to agree a framework which will secure the future of the North West 200 and help the team deliver a truly first class event for both participants and spectators.”

Whyte is confident the event can now move forward and paid tribute to DCAL, Coleraine Borough Council, NITB and the Coleraine Club for their hard work and support in helping to shape the new structure. “Clerk of Course duties have now been divided amongst our seven new managers with the new operations manager being responsible for duties on the grid. We are now all looking forward to building on work already in place for the 2010 International North West 200 which is set to take place on Saturday 15th May following ratification by the Motor Cycle Union of Ireland (Ulster Centre) on 14th November.

Coleraine & District Motor Club Chairman John Wilson said, “Club members are delighted that we’ve resolved our organisational issues and are pleased that Mervyn Whyte is staying on board and taking on a new strategic role which will help develop the future of the North West. In his new position Mervyn will continue to secure and manage rider teams and participants and will also act as event spokesperson.”

The International North West 200 has received many awards in the past few years including Event of the Year at the NITB Awards in 2008, the Freedom of Coleraine in 2003, a CIPR Pride Award for public relations in 2004, a NI Travel & Tourism Award in 2005, a Belfast Telegraph Sports Award for Mervyn Whyte in 2006 and in 2007 Mervyn was awarded an MBE for services to motorsport.
